Life-Cycle Assessment Summit LCAS-2025

Paving the Way Forward to Sustainability in Technical Textiles

Under National Technical Textiles Mission (NTTM),

Ministry of Textiles, Government of India

9th & 10th January 2025

SASMIRA, Mumbai, India

Thank you for being part of LCAS-2025! This summit marked the beginning of a critical dialogue on sustainability and innovation in technical textiles, and we look forward to collectively carrying this mission forward for a greener and more resilient future.

About LCAS-2025

As the world faces unprecedented environmental challenges, sustainability has become an urgent global priority. The technical textiles sector, a significant contributor to industrial progress, now finds itself at the crossroads of innovation and responsibility. With global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from textiles and apparel industries contributing to 8–10% of total emissions, the need for sustainable solutions has never been more critical

LCAS-2025 aims to address this challenge by introducing Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) practices to the technical textiles sector in India. LCA is a globally recognized, standardized tool for assessing the environmental impact of products from their creation to disposal. It plays a crucial role in identifying carbon hotspots, enabling industries to make informed decisions toward achieving net-zero emissions, a goal India has committed to attaining by 2070.

The Life Cycle Assessment Summit (LCAS-2025), hosted by SASMIRA on the occasion of its 75th Anniversary, is a landmark initiative to introduce the Indian technical textiles industry to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) practices. With the global focus on reducing carbon emissions and environmental footprints, the summit aims to equip industries with the knowledge and tools necessary to achieve sustainability, improve resource efficiency, and enhance global competitiveness.

The Environmental Imperative

Sustainability Challenges in Textiles
The textiles industry contributes significantly to global environmental concerns:

  • Carbon Footprint: Textiles generate 1.2 billion tonnes of CO2 annually, more than the combined emissions from global aviation and shipping.
  • Resource Intensity: Textile production consumes 93 billion cubic meters of water annually, with a single pair of denim jeans requiring 1,000 gallons of water.
  • Pollution and Waste: The industry is responsible for 20% of global wastewater pollution and releases vast amounts of microplastics into oceans.
  • These challenges highlight the urgent need for sustainable practices, making the adoption of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) indispensable for the industry.

What is LCA

Life Cycle Assessment is a scientific methodology that evaluates the environmental impact of a product throughout its lifecycle—from raw material extraction and manufacturing, to use and disposal. It identifies critical carbon, water, and energy hotspots, enabling industries to:

  1. Mitigate Environmental Impacts: By optimizing processes and materials.
  2. Achieve Sustainability Goals: Through data-driven decision-making.
  3. Stay Globally Competitive: By aligning with global sustainability frameworks.

Why Focus on Technical Textiles

Technical textiles are omnipresent, spanning applications across various sectors like agriculture, aerospace, healthcare, defence, construction, sports, packaging etc. have become an integral to modern life. There is a wealth of data on emissions and environmental impacts for fashion clothing, the technical textiles sector remains underrepresented. However, their resource-intensive production processes underscore the need for sustainability initiatives. By integrating LCA, the technical textiles industry can:

  • Understand and reduce its environmental footprint.
  • Contribute to national and global carbon reduction commitments.
  • Lead innovation in circularity and eco-friendly practices.

SASMIRA’s Commitment

SASMIRA, an approved body of the Ministry of Textile, is proud to take the lead through the dedicated summit on LCA in technical textiles. This summit reflects SASMIRA’s legacy of innovation and its mission to empower industries with sustainable practices.
